Having been a long time fan of Westone, I have recentlydecided to get my first pair of CM earphones - LEAR LCM-3B.

Just thought I would share with you what I think about the CMs as someone whois interested in earphones but not yet an expert. As a disclaimer, this isindeed a post under the testing promotion, but I’ll just try to be as honestand professional as possible.

Why LEAR and LCM-3B?
I first heard about LEAR when my friend went to their shop to fix a pair ofBeyerdynamics Headphones. I was really surprised to know there is such acutting edge brand in Hong Kong and decided to come get a pair of CM when mybudget allows. The testing promotion has been a push, but the very reason wasreally the sound of the little devices. I was listening to music with a pair ofWestone 3 at that moment. Since I was with a 3-driver earphones at that time, the only meaningful upgrade would be for me to get at least another 3-driver.

I tested the three different LCM-3 models and finally chose LCM 3B since the boomingbass was really outstanding among the three. I guess none was absolutely betterthan the other, it’s more of a personal preference.

I listen mostly to Indie Rock, Electronic, Pop, R&B which is really heavyon bass and to have booming base like a big head-phone that would not cloud themid range and high frequency is one of the main reasons why I would pay so muchfor a multi-driver earphone. Westone 3 has the bass but I have always found ita bit lacking on the clarity and separation of the mid range and highfrequency.

Out of all the 3-driver LCM’s, LCM 3B had the sound signature that I like themost. The bass was really rich and not dispersed, really like a deep massage ofthe ears but not to the point when it hurts. It’s as if you could almost feelhow the vibration of the sound travels in your ear.

Ordering and Service
The service was efficient and effective. I got the answers I needed in a timelymanner and the staff was really helpful in explaining the differences betweenthe look and colours of the different materials. I think a big part of gettinga CM is to really create something personal, and I have to say that the LCM 3Breally have come up as I have expected in terms of the colour combination andtexture. The samples were great in showing the actual effect and colours that Ichoose. What I really like is for the case to have some transparency to lookinto internal parts of the earphones and it was nicely done as expected.
I had my ear waxed and modelled in Mongok. It wasprofessionally done and the entire process took only about 20 minutes. Thestaff at the clinic said my ears were very clean and told me that they have hadcustomers whose ears were so dirty that they had to go there again after theyhave cleaned their ears! So do so before you go there if you do not have thehabit to clean your ears regularly.

After the appointment to make my ear moulds, I received acall to collect the earphones after about 2 weeks.

Unpacking
There actually was not much unpacking to do cause I tested the earphones at theshop. The package came in a tin box, in which you can find a zip-up case andalso a cloth and a cleaning stick. Not much to comment on really, but just forthe ease of storage I personally would prefer plastic or paper packaging, whenproperly designed they can be classy as well.

Look
I selected a glossy black panel with black logo, and the body of the right caseis red and left blue. Loved the transparency of the body and the subtlety ofthe black logo on black panel. The cord is silver / white as default, which Iactually prefer to black cord as the silver cord sorta blend in to your outfitand is not that obvious. When I put them on, only a very very thin part of theblue / red body would show and people normally would only see the black panel.

Fit
The LCM 3B was my first pair of CMs, so it was really my first listeningexperience with such fitted devices in my ears. I have to say in the beginningI wasn’t as comfortable as expected, but I guess I expected the wrong thing asI thought you wouldn’t be able to feel them since they have been moulded toyour ears.
That’s not true.
You’d still be able to feel them, but it wasn’t an veryintrusive feeling and once you get used to it you wouldn’t even notice them. With my old pair of Westone 3, I had been using exclusively the grey ear-budsfrom Comply. Those foam ear buds are great when they have only been used for1-2 weeks, after that, they would just go soft and oily. Given how much theycost, changing the ear buds every 2 weeks was something that I would do. Butwith the CMs, it feels like as if they are just placed in your ears, but notexpanding and trapped in your ears as what foam ear buds make me feel all thetime.

Set up
I listen to music on Spotify and they are all 320kbps MP3 files. I just plugthe CMs to my phone (HTC One M8) without any amp or equaliser.

Sound
When I first listened with the brand new LEAR LCM 3B to the music on my HTC OneM8, the sound was a bit dull and it did felt slightly like as if I was in asubmarine. But then the sound started to clear up after about 30 hours oflistening (about two weeks). The change was really obvious. The bass was moreseparated from the mid range and high frequency and has more depth. It feelslike as if the drum was hit in the middle of your head.

The voice of the rock songs that I listen to does lack the clarity I heard inthose 4-driver earphones, but is much clearer than my Westone 3.

I also like listening to live music with the LCM 3B as it reflect really wellthe location of the sound and it felt like as if I was in the live house.
Conclusion
I think the LCM 3B has been a very good buy. It was a worthyupgrade from my Westone 3 due to the extra clarity and a more generic soundsignature, which has struck a balance between the power and depth of the bassand the details that I would like to listen in the mid range and highfrequency. The comfort and customisable options are what really justify theextra you pay for a pair of CMs compared to just another 3-driver universalearphones, I personally think it is really worth it.
